Writing on 원고지 (Korean manuscript paper) is an essential skill for the TOPIK II writing exam. This traditional format requires precision and adherence to specific rules to ensure clarity and proper structure. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help learners master 원고지 작성법 (manuscript writing rules) for the exam.

1. Understanding 원고지 Format

원고지 consists of squared grids, with each square designated for a single character. This includes Hangul (Korean alphabet), Hanja (Chinese characters), punctuation marks, and spaces.

2. Basic Writing Rules

• One Character Per Square: Each square should contain only one character, including punctuation marks.
• Paragraph Indentation: The first square of a new paragraph must be left blank. Start writing from the second square.
• Spacing Rules:
• Leave one square blank for spacing between words.
• Do not leave a blank square after a period (.), comma (,), colon (:), or semicolon (;).
• Leave one square blank after a question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!).
• Writing Numbers: Arabic numerals are written two digits per square.
• End-of-Line Punctuation: If a punctuation mark falls at the end of a line and there is no room for it, place it in the same square as the last character.

3. Structuring Your Writing

• Title Placement: The title should not be written in the first square.
• Consistent Formatting: Within a paragraph, do not leave the first square of each new line blank.
• Handling Complex Sentences: Maintain proper spacing and punctuation placement to ensure readability.

4. Practice and Preparation
