 TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) Guidelines

 

1. Objectives of the TOPIK Test:

l   This test aims to set a proper Korean language-learning path for overseas Koreans and foreigners who do not speak Korean as their mother tongue and to promote the use of the Korean language.

l   TOPIK scores can also be used for local university applications as well as for employment purposes.

 

2. TOPIK Target Test Takers:

Overseas Koreans and foreigners who do not speak Korean as their mother tongue:

l  Those learning the Korean language and those with the intention of applying to local universities.

l   Those who intend to join/work for domestic/overseas Korean companies and public organizations.

l   Koreans who studied at or graduated from schools overseas.

 

3. Validity

Valid for two (2) years after the announcement of the test results.

5. Benefits of TOPIK

l   University admission and academic management of foreign Korean government scholars.

l   Local university admission for foreigners and overseas Koreans who have completed 12 years of education abroad.

l   Obtaining a work visa for those who want to be employed at Korean companies and serving as a standard for selecting and managing employees.

l   Recognizing a domestic practitioner license for foreigners with medical doctor qualifications.

l   Application for the Korean Language Teaching Qualification test (levels 2 and 3) and the acquisition of a certificate.

l   Acquisition of permanent residency rights.

l   Application for the issuance of a marriage-based immigrant visa.

7. Testing Schedule

The test is held six times per year, with dates varying by region and time zone. 8. Level and Grade of Test

- Test levels: TOPIK I, TOPIK II

- Evaluation grade: 6 grades (from 1st to 6th)

- Grading is based on the total score earned; the cut-off scores per grade are as follows:

writing type (1 descriptive writing ranging from 200-300 letters at the intermediate level and, 1 argumentatvie writing ranging from 600 – 700 letters at the advanced level).

 

10. Evaluation of Writing Test

12. Evaluation Criteria by Points

Can understand and compose straightforward texts for daily life and practical purposes.
	Level 2	140 ~ 200	Able to perform daily life functions, such as making phone calls, requesting favors, and using public facilities (e.g., post offices, banks). Can comprehend and produce paragraph-level discourse on personal and familiar topics using 1,500–2,000 vocabulary words. Demonstrates the ability to distinguish between formal and informal language contexts and use them appropriately.
TOPIK II	Level 3	120 ~ 149	Capable of managing daily life without significant difficulty and performing basic language functions required for using public facilities and maintaining social relationships. Can understand and express paragraph-level content on familiar and concrete topics. Distinguishes and uses basic features of spoken and written language appropriately.
	Level 4	150 ~ 189	Able to perform language functions necessary for using public facilities, maintaining social relationships, and handling general professional tasks. Can comprehend news articles and newspaper content of moderate difficulty. Demonstrates relatively accurate and fluent understanding and use of language in general social and abstract contexts. Understands and utilizes frequently used idiomatic expressions and content related to representative Korean culture.
	Level 5	190 ~ 229	Capable of performing language functions required for professional research or work to a considerable extent. Can comprehend and use language related to unfamiliar topics across politics, economics, society, and culture. Appropriately distinguishes and employs language in formal/informal and spoken/written contexts.
	Level 6	230 ~ 300	Able to perform language functions necessary for professional research or work with relative accuracy and fluency. Comprehends and utilizes language on unfamiliar topics across diverse fields, including politics, economics, society, and culture. While not equivalent to a native speaker’s proficiency, can execute tasks and express meaning without difficulty.

 

 

13. Score Announcement and Score Certificate Issuance

(1) Score Announcement and Checking Method:

Access the TOPIK website (www.topik.go.kr) to check your scores. To view your scores on the website, you will need the test session number, registration number, and date of birth. Overseas test-takers may also check their scores through the website.

 

(2) Score Certificate Issuance Eligibility:

Score certificates are issued to all examinees, except those who engaged in fraudulent activities, regardless of their pass/fail status.

 

(3) Score Certificate Issuance Method:

Score certificates can be issued online via the "Score Certificate Issuance" menu on the TOPIK website. Online issuance and printing are available starting from the score announcement date.

한국어능력시험 TOPIK 안내

 

1. 시험의 목적

- 한국어를 모국어로 하지 않는 외국인 및 재외동포의 한국어 학습 방향 제시 및 한국어 보급 확대

- 한국어 사용 능력을 측정·평가하여 그 결과를 유학 및 취업 등에 활용

 

2. 응시대상

한국어를 모국어로 하지 않는 재외동포 및 외국인으로서

- 한국어 학습자 및 국내외 대학 유학 희망자

- 국내외 한국 기업체 및 공공기관 취업 희망자

- 외국 학교 재학 중이거나 졸업한 재외국민

 

3. 유효 기간

성적 발표일로부터 2년간 유효

- 획득한 종합 점수를 기준으로 판정되며, 등급별 분할 점수는 아래와 같습니다.

TOPIK I	1급	80 ~ 139	자기 소개하기, 물건 사기, 음식 주문하기 등 생존에 필요한 기초적인 언어 기능을 수행할 수 있으며 자기 자신, 가족, 취미, 날씨 등 매우 사적이고 친숙한 화제에 관련된 내용을 이해하고 표현할 수 있다. 약 800개의 기초 어휘와 기본 문법에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 간단한 문장을 생성할 수 있다. 또한 간단한 생활문과 실용문을 이해하고 구성할 수 있다.
	2급	140 ~ 200	전화하기, 부탁하기 등의 일상생활에 필요한 기능과 우체국, 은행 등의 공공시설 이용에 필요한 기능을 수행할 수 있다. 약 1,500~2,000개의 어휘를 이용하여 사적이고 친숙한 화제에 관해 문단 단위로 이해하고 사용할 수 있다. 공식적 상황과 비공식적 상황에서의 언어를 구분해 사용할 수 있다.
TOPIK II	3급	120 ~ 149	일상생활을 영위하는 데 별 어려움을 느끼지 않으며 다양한 공공시설의 이용과 사회적 관계 유지에 필요한 기초적 언어 기능을 수행할 수 있다. 친숙하고 구체적인 소재는 물론 자신에게 친숙한 소재를 문단 단위로 표현하거나 이해할 수 있다. 문어와 구어의 기본적인 특성을 구분해서 이해하고 사용할 수 있다.

 

	4급	150 ~ 189	공공시설 이용과 사회적 관계 유지에 필요한 언어 기능을 수행할 수 있으며 일반적인 업무 수행에 필요한 기능을 어느 정도 수행할 수 있다. 또한 뉴스, 신문 기사 중 비교적 평이한 내용을 이해할 수 있다. 일반적인 사회적ᆞ추상적 소재를 비교적 정확하고 유창하게 이해하고 사용할 수 있다. 자주 사용되는 관용적 표현과 대표적인 한국 문화에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 사회ᆞ문화적인 내용을 이해하고 사용할 수 있다.
	5급	190 ~ 229	전문 분야에서의 연구나 업무 수행에 필요한 언어 기능을 어느 정도 수행할 수 있으며 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 전반에 걸쳐 친숙하지 않은 소재에 관해서도 이해하고 사용할 수 있다. 공식적ᆞ비공식적 맥락과 구어적ᆞ문어적 맥락에 따라 언어를 적절히 구분해 사용할 수 있다.
	6급	230 ~ 300	전문 분야에서의 연구나 업무 수행에 필요한 언어 기능을 비교적 정확하고 유창하게 수행할 수 있으며 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 전반에 걸쳐 친숙하지 않은 주제에 관해서도 이용하고 사용할 수 있다. 원어민 화자의 수준에는 이르지 못하나 기능 수행이나 의미 표현에는 어려움을 겪지 않는다.

 

13. 성적 발표 및 성적 증명서 발급

(1) 성적 발표 및 확인 방법

홈페이지 (www.topik.go.kr) 접속 후 확인 

홈페이지에 접속하여 성적을 확인할 경우 시험 회차, 수험번호, 생년월일이 필요합니다.

해외 응시자도 홈페이지를 통해 자기 성적 확인 가능합니다.

 

(2) 성적 증명서 발급 대상

부정행위자를 제외하고 합격, 불합격 여부에 관계없이 응시자 전원에게 발급

 

(3) 성적 증명서 발급 방법

인터넷 발급 TOPIK 홈페이지 성적 증명서 발급 메뉴를 이용하여 온라인 발급 (성적 발표 당일 출력 가능)
